Having grown up in Bronkhorstpruit one would think I would be accustomed to the point of jadedness of the spectacle that is the Nan Hua Temple. Situated a mere hour and a half’s drive away from Joburg, it is the most calming experience I have had in a long time. The temple was a gift to the Bronkhorstspruit community from the Buddist Community.
What I love more than the serenity of being in the space is the beauty of it. The detail for the art can be discovered for hours. I passed by here on my way to see my granny and what I had intended to be a couple of minutes and maybe an Instagram shot turned into two hours and a blog post. If you can get there and you need a moment to pull yourself towards yourself then I suggest you take a trip there. One can visit for the day and simply walk around or take a retreat and book accommodation and classes. The monks often cook the most amazing vegetarian lunch on Sundays which are free and one to the community but this doesn’t happen with any regularity so it’s down to your luck.
