This passed weekend I had the privilege of hiking with Team Fusion Hikes on their winter hikeaway in Mpumalanga. I made a cute little hiking essentials post for Instagram thinking this hike would be a chatty walk in the (slightly bigger than normal) park. Man was I in for a surprise.
Never in a million years could I have imagined the vast beauty that I would be confronted by or the frightening leg day of a hike that I had to endure. I’m obviously exaggerating the pain and difficulty because that’s what I do when it comes to pain and difficulty. In truth it was relatively easy when diluted by the beautiful serene surrounds and cheerful banter of the group. When I say cheerful banter I mean raucous comedy and furious selfie taking.
What unexpected fun! I mean I expected to have a pleasant time. Just not the level of crazy fun I had which was in large part due to the amazing individuals that made up the hiking club. Youthful, energetic, loud and funny! Nothing like the picture I had in my head next to the definition of hiking club.
These hikes are organized by the lovely hostess with the mostess Tools. Who kept us all up to pace and later kept us all fed and warm during our evening chats around the camp fire.
I started out looking for was to stay fit in winter and ended up falling for hiking in a bad way. I love it and I will be trekking soon again!
This 12km hike was in Badplaas Mpumalanga – a 3hour drive out of Johannesburg. It was totally worth it even with the puncture we had on the gravel road leading into the farm. However, if you prefer something shorter and a little more local there are monthly day hikes in and around the city that Team Fusion Hikes organize. Follow them on Instagram to see when the next one will be.
